Though a common feature in most women, pregnancy back pain occurs in most pregnancies at some stage or the other. If it exists before the onset of pregnancy, taking measures to alleviate it before conception would be the wise way to go. If you are planning to get pregnant, ensure some minimal fitness before you embark on that journey to ensure optimum health for you and your baby.

Back Pain and Why

Back aches in pregnancy can be due to a lot of factors, the most common being strain. The growing uterus can place stress on the pelvic area causing the pain to radiate to the surrounding muscles and ligaments. In the earlier stages of pregnancy, back pain causes can be attributed to incorrect posture while sitting or lifting heavy objects.  Previous back injury, lack of exercises, inadequate rest will ensure continual pain throughout the term of pregnancy unless addressed early on. Towards the end of the day, the pregnancy back pain might be more severe due to being up and about all day. While sleeping too, sleeping on one side or continuously on the back can cause the uterus to press down on the spine. It is better to avoid lifting objects off the floor, but if unavoidable, one should bend at the knees rather than the hip. While pregnant, some women require more bed rest than others.

Pain Relief and You

Moderate and adequate exercises can ensure back pain relief and a comfortable nine months free from pain and stress. Correct posture while sleeping and sitting can help. Sitting upright with a back rest, and a contoured pillow while sleeping, takes away the strain on the back. A hip bath with warm water at the end of the day can soothe away the pregnancy back pain.  A doctor or therapist can suggest pelvic floor exercises with correct breathing and, massage techniques that can alleviate back pain. Massaging the lower back on either side of the spine can provide immediate and much needed relief. Though a pain killer should be had if unavoidable, the methods mentioned above are recommended. All pre-natal exercises and the amount of it should be certified by the doctor.

Pregnancy back pain might continue to exist subtly but weekly exercises designed specifically for pregnancy, adequate rest, correct breathing techniques and posture can help attain a comfortable pregnancy.  Since each pregnancy is unique in its own way, the methods mentioned above, to avoid suffering from back pain due to pregnancy, will also vary from woman to woman. You can try each method or a combination of these methods to figure out the ones that suit you best.
