Lower Back Pain or lumbago is a neurological symptom, second to headache, which occurs in 90% Americans at some time of their active life. It is not a specific ailment. It is a disorder caused due to strain, spasm, or sprain in muscle or muscle ligaments in the back, osteoporosis, arthritis, viral infections, irritation to joints and discs or other abnormalities in the spine of a human being. Obesity, smoking, pregnancy, stress, tumors or improper sitting or standing posture can also lead to back pain. It creeps up mostly at the age of 30 to 50 equally in men and women but can also become prevalent due to lack of proper exercise and continuous sitting conditions. It can be acute, lasting for some days to some weeks, or subacute with the condition of coming and going. However, in some cases it becomes chronic, lasting for years.
Many back pain treatments are present, but the person has to get diagnosed the main cause of it from the doctor. If the back pain is acute, proper rest should be taken. Person should try lying on his side with a pillow between the knees. Person can take medicines to reduce pain such acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Heating pad or warm shower can also be used after every 2 to 3 hours.
Back Pain exercises are another method to help the person relieving from this pain. When the pain has reduced a bit, strengthening exercises of stomach, back and legs and stretching exercises can help to reduce the pain and make the muscles of thigh strong. Person should also do regular walking, riding, swimming or jogging to avoid developing pain. If exercise is new, he should have training from a physical trainer.
The person should not sit down completely on experiencing the pain. He should continue his active life as little or no activity can lead to development of further complications or ailments along with it and then to more pain. He should know that “Pain leads to closing of the brain which further leads to closing all the activities of bodyâ€.
